You’ll find Fourth Door’s Pioneering the Potential regional Sussex-based wood and natural materials events highlighted here, its live complement to Annular, the wood and timber culture site. Pioneering the Potential is a regional strand within Fourth Door’s broader events focusses, one which encompasses talks, symposia, workshops, films, festivals, performances, and special one-off celebratory events.

Beginning with a first Wood Plus Day held in June 2019, Fourth Door has co-ordinated annual Pioneering the Potential events in each subsequent year, except 2020, when Covid shuttered the doors.

These have included two series of evening talks, The Xylo Sessions (2022), and Evolving the Bio base (2023), a Post-Local timber culture micro-symposium (September 2021) and its launch Pioneering the Potential Wood Day event (2019), featuring morning presentations and an afternoon a coach tour of East Sussex timber highlights.

We’ve also run two afternoon ‘micro-symposium’s exploring related themes; on healthcare design – Health, Habitats & Hubs in 2022, and alternative housing – Heart, Hearth & Housing in 2023.

Pioneering the Potential continues Fourth Door’s events work, stretching back to 2009, through Roots Architecture@WOMAD  design & make workshops, the Making Lewes’s festivals, talks and workshops, and the Root & Branch symposia events.
